A Free Holiday on Ponza in Exchange for Your Help

Ponza is a beautiful island off the Lazio coast. This summer you can holiday there for free if you help the locals to clean the island.

The Pro Loco of Ponza (a local volunteer grass-roots organization) under the patronage of the Municipality of Ponza, in collaboration with local tourism entrepreneurs has launched an initiative called “A volunteer friend”.

The island will host four volunteers per week ( from Sunday to Friday ) in exchange of volunteer work to clean up the beaches, roads, nature trails, local events venues, archaeological sites. For the duration of work, the participants will stay in a self-catering apartment free. The working hours will be from 7.30am to 2pm. After that, you are free to roam and do whatever you wish. The initiative runs from April to October (excluding August). Volunteers will have to pay for their food and transport. However, if you travel from Terracina you can avail of a 50% discount offered to all volunteers by the shipping company SNAP.

Ponza is packed with tourists in August and is better enjoyed before or after the stampede. The island is full of archaeological treasures including Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Phoenician ruins, and  Etruscan grottoes.

You can find more information about the volunteering programme on the Pro Loco website (in English, German and French).
