A few years ago thirteen farms in the Bologna, Modena and Reggio Emilia got together and set up a Club of Excellence, a network of organic producers that care about the environment, local traditions, and support rural tourism development. Now they have a website that should make your choice of lace to stay very easy: pick a farm in the area you want to visit and enjoy your authentic Italian experience. Here are just a few examples of what’s on offer.
Learn how to make balsamic vinegar. Agriturismo Santa Chiara is a small farm near Modena where guests can not only gorge on seasonal organic food but also see how the famous organic balsamic vinegar of Modena is made. Marco will guide you through the making process of this precious condiment that is supposed to be aged for at least 12 years. Here, as a gift to yourself or a loved one, you can buy a small bottle of 25 year old vinegar that tastes like nectar! At Santa Chiara also make traditional walnut and laurel berries liqueurs.
Make your own tortelloni pasta. Cà Penelope is all about organic and sustainable: the furniture is recycled and decorated by hand, the house is powered by solar panels, everything that comes out of the kitchen is made with organic ingredients from the farm. Even the coffee is fair trade and organic here! Fabrizia, who runs the place, can also teach you how to make delicious pasta.

Taste local wine and cook. At the farm La Quercia, near Bologna, you will be offered fresh hand-made bread, crostata cakes with home-made jam, lovely organic wine, eggs, cereals, pork, beef, chicken, all produced here. At the guests requests the family that runs the farm will be happy to give cooking lessons and teach what wine goes better with the hearty local dishes.

Eat well and ride a donkey. Agriturismo Cà del Ciuco is a quiet place, not far from the city of Reggio Emilia. This farm offers not only serves organic food (tortelli with sage, cake with ricotta and blueberries, yummmmm!) but also some fantastic activities for adults and kids. They can organise donkey rides in the picturesque hills as well as walks around the beautiful villages nearby. Room prices are 20-25 euro per person.
